Our mission is to provide an artist showcase and creative venue for songwriters, musicians, poets, and storytellers to share ideas, music, and other works of art with each other and with residents and visitors on the island of North Haven and the surrounding area of Maine’s Penobscot Bay. We seek to create intimate community and harmony through the joy and shared experience of live music, the arts, and learning.
Connect, Create, Enrich and Inspire!

Zeb has lived on North Haven his whole life. He was born into a long line of islanders and quickly became immersed in the fishing industry. He bought this first lobster boat at 14, and hauled his traps before and after school. After a short time in college, he decided to shift his professional trajectory into industries more suited to his desired balance for reciprocity with nature. He moved into oyster farming, where he co-operated the family oyster farm his mother and father started in 1990. Simultaneously he started to keep bees. He quickly fell in love with beekeeping which is now where he puts most of his time. He has a deep love for music, and plays guitar and banjo to his two young daughters. His partner Edith is a lifelong musician, and his goal is to have as much music in his family's life as possible. He hopes to instill in his daughters that music will take them where money won’t.

Hannah was born and raised in the foothills of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains and found her way to North Haven in 2020. In the midst of the pandemic’s onset, she began work at Brown’s Boatyard, where shipwright work quickly opened into a deeper curiosity about Maine’s working waterfront and the broader human–ocean relationship. That work expanded into commercial lobstering, aquaculture, and blue water sailing. Hannah completed her degree at New York University, studying Maritime Anthropology—the reciprocal and consequential relationship between humankind and Earth’s oceans, past and present. Her focus has since expanded into how creative mediums and storytelling both examine and shape the ways we relate to, make sense of, and move through aquatic and littoral spaces, individually and collectively.

Ted Ruegg first came to North Haven in 1967 to visit his grandmother with his parents; he was 2 years old. Since then, he has returned almost every year. He learned how to sail, run a powerboat, and cook a lobster on the island. He spent 40 years in the marine publishing business with Sailing World and Cruising World, and is now the publisher of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine and the producer of the Maine Boat & Home Show in Rockland.
In the summer, when not at a Crabtree Sessions show, you'll find him on a sailboat or powerboat in the thoroughfare or on the porch of his grandmother's house, the Pill Box, on Kent's Hill. In the winter, Ted lives in New Harbor, Maine.

Sam is a longtime lover of folk music, a teacher, a gardener, and a singer-songwriter originally from Arlington, Virginia. She has been on North Haven since 2023 as the island’s 7th–12th grade science teacher and recently joined the Crabtree Sessions board.
Sam grew up singing in a church choir and started a band in Virginia called The Fronds. She enjoys meeting the many wonderful musicians who come to North Haven as part of Crabtree Sessions and looks forward to future musical collaborations. Music is one of the places where Sam has always felt most hopeful and most at home.

Crabtree Sessions was created with the dream to cultivate a strong community full of music, poetry, storytelling and other works of art.
Michael is the dreamer and founder of Crabtree Sessions, a project born from his life as a farmer, adventurer, storyteller, and songwriter. Living on his creative homestead in the Fox Islands of Maine, Michael draws inspiration from the land, sea, and the simple moments of daily life. He grows food, writes songs, and crafts stories that reflect his deep connection to nature and the coastal rhythms that shape his world. Through Crabtree Sessions, he invites others to experience the magic of island living, where music, farming, and dreaming intertwine to create something uniquely beautiful and real.
This space fosters cultural exchange, enrichment and community allowing artists to share their world, their stories, and their creative spirit in an environment where nature and art come together. It’s a place where dreams are nurtured, connections are made, and new songs are born.

Most recently a carpenter and farmer by day – Jake studied music theory, composition, and recording engineering near Charlottesville Virginia under the mentorship of Anne Marie Simpson (co-creator of MixHalo) and Wallace Hornady. He was able to learn his way around a mixing board and audio software while running sound for professional live theater performances as well as musical artists such as Keller Williams, Peyton Tochterman, Don McCloskey, the Harlem Gospel Choir and a number of other local Charlottesville performers. > > He moved to a rural log cabin near Rollinsville Colorado and remained connected in the music scene in the towns of Rollinsville, Nederland, and Boulder. He spent several years in Colorado developing his own songwriting and musicianship as well as being in charge of recording live performances at the famous Stage Stop Inn where he recorded shows by artists like Yonder Mountain String Band, Vince Herman, and Elephant Revival - among others. > > On North Haven since 2018, Jake, his partner Devon and their two year old son, River, have been involved in farming a family owned plot of land, Wild Ledge Farm – raising chickens, ducks, goats, and vegetables. > >

I come from a long line of kings that never existed and I have no relation to either Walt Whitman, William Blake, or Blake Lively. Vermont is home, but Brooklyn and Maine have my heart as well. I helped make Vimeo for a long time and then dabbled in VR, but
I'm more fond of leaves and rocks than ones and zeros. Experience and connection are my currencies of choice and I am currently experimenting with its possibilities with Sterling Forest Lodge.
I hope to write a book one day (about anything) so I can lead this bio with that accomplishment.

Oakley is a creature of the sea. He grew up on the small neighboring island of Greens and enjoys spending his days on the water. He is the father of twins, Tig and Wes, and is usually in the company of his trusty dog, Finn. Though not musical himself, he is a great lover of music and celebrates it through dancing. Curtis really likes music, stories, and convincing people to sponsor Crabtree. He is the official Crabtree grant writer, farm liaison, and occasional opening act on concert nights. Curtis has spent the summer working on North Haven for three years, and can often be found driving around in his grandma’s VW bus (Thumbelina) or writing sad cowboy music. “A working knee would just weigh me down”.
We are always on the look out for creatives and music lovers to join us as volunteers or interns. Get in touch to explore working together during our next summer season.
